Frequently Asked Questions

You can be relieved that you've bought a Basha kantha blanket! Several features make it the best kantha blanket on the market! Many other kantha blankets are thin--a mere two layers thick, the fabric is thread bare, and stitching is loose and frayed at the ends. Basha blankets are different! For the standard blanket (unless otherwise stated), Basha uses six layers of cloth to provide a thicker, sturdier blanket. Basha uses gently recycled cloth (or new cloth, if your heart so desires!). So your Basha blanket is beautiful and will hold up under normal, gentle use. Basha blankets also have even, tied-off stitches and finished edges, keeping the blanket layers together and giving them a longer life.

There are currently 160 Basha women who work in five different locations in Bangladesh. Behind the superior quality of your Basha product is an artisan who earns a sustainable wage to support herself and her family. You can find the name of the artisan who crafted your blanket on the label. To read a little about her, look up her name in Artisan Stories.

Basha follows fair trade guidelines by providing a safe, clean work environment and wages that afford food, housing, education, life-skills mentoring, child care and education, and medical benefits for the artisan. While charitable giving is always accepted (see friendsofbasha.org for more details or to make a donation), artisans rely on their dignified work, not charity, to support themselves.

Kantha is the name for a traditional stitch common to the area. Several layers of cloth are sewn together using straight, parallel stitches. The standard kantha blanket (39 x 78 in) takes about 20 hours to craft.
